Introduction to BPAY

BPAY is a widely used Australian payment service that allows a Payer to make secure account-to-account payments to a Biller using a Biller Code and Customer Reference Number instead of card details.

Zai offers BPAY as both a Payin and Payout method that can be used within your payment workflows.

What’s needed to pay?

Biller Code

A BPAY Biller Code is a unique 4–6 digit number that identifies a business or organisation authorised to receive payments via the BPAY network.

Customer Reference Number (CRN)

A Customer Reference Number (CRN) is a unique reference provided by the biller that identifies the specific customer or account the payment relates to.

Together, the Biller Code and CRN ensure the payment is routed to the correct biller and applied to the correct account.

Receiving BPAY Payins

Customers paying your platform via BPAY initiate payments through their financial institution’s internet or mobile banking. Zai then routes the funds directly to the associated User Wallet.

Making BPAY Payouts

If your platform needs to pay billers as part of an onward payment flow, you can initiate a BPAY payment through Zai’s API. Zai will then pay the biller directly from funds held in the specified User Wallet.
